Shriners Hats Add a Sense of Membership

Shriner's hats are a symbol of membership in the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, or Shriners. These iconic fezzes are a unique and recognizable part of the Shriners’ culture; they are worn by members at ceremonies and other events. The traditional red fez with its black tassel is most seen, but some Shriner’s have customized their headwear to reflect their own interests or organizations.

Exotic Symbol

The history of Shriner's hats goes back to 1870 when the organization was founded by Walter M. Fleming and William J. Florence in New York City. In 1872, shortly after the founding, they adopted the distinctive red felt hat with a black silk tassel. The fez was chosen as it was the headdress worn by high-ranking Turkish officials and was seen as an exotic symbol of power and authority in that era. Since then, Shriners have proudly donned their fezzes on ceremonial occasions to demonstrate unity and commitment to their organization.

Allegiances Within the Order

The traditional red felt fez is made of wool cloth with a black tassel attached to the top. Some organizations also have special versions of the hat such as a white or purple fez, while others may feature decorations such as crossed swords, stars, or other symbols on the front. Many members choose to customize their hats with pins or patches that reflect their personal interests or allegiances within the Order. Shriners’ hats are a symbol of pride, unity and brotherhood within the organization.

A Show of Pride and Style

They also serve as important reminders of the mission of the Order - to provide care for children in need through their network of Shriners Hospitals for Children. By wearing their fezzes, members demonstrate their commitment to this cause and show that they stand united in helping those who need it most.  Though Shriner's type hats are primarily worn at official ceremonies, they can also be worn as a show of pride and style. For those looking to spruce up their wardrobe with something unique, a fez is a great choice. Not only does it stand out from the crowd, but it also serves as a reminder of your commitment to helping children in need. Contact d. Turin today to learn more.
